Building Homes or Extensions/Concrete roof

Question
I'm building a concrete shed with 8" filled CMU block walls and 12ft x 8ft interior roof span. The roof will be constructed 6inch thick concrete with #4 rebar grid 12inch OC. The load will be 6" dense dirt on top + 50psf snow load + 200lb person occasionally walking on it. Will my roof be strong enough?

Thanks..

Answer
Hi Tom, Using #4 rebar, I would go to 8" on center or up my rebar size to #5.  The steel should be located close to the bottome of the slab using 1" chairs.  Then I would install a top mat of temperature steel on 4" chairs, #4 @ 24" on center each way. Be sure to keep your 3000# minimum concrete slump low around 5" and use a mechanical vibrator to consolidate it during the pour.   I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
