Building Homes or Extensions - Replacing fascia board- no soffit. Sealing attic

Expert: Dan Griffin - 11/4/2009

Question
Hello Mr. Griffin,
I have removed the outside trim and old gutters around my brick home. (under rehab). The attic rafters end on top of the brick and between the tail rafters are cut boards. I want to install new trim, but will not have any soffits. I am sealing the attic envelope with open-cell insulation. I have researched the proper way to install fascia, but I will be missing several elements. The way it is set up now, I'm nailing the fascia into the edge of my roof and nailing the drip edge to it. Is it a mistake? I am planning to purchase LP smart side fascia or Mira-tech. Should I do anything more?
Thank you,
Marie

Answer
Marie, I prefer eave overhangs and soffits, it just seems to make roof venting easier and makes the fascia/gutter/roof edge details more simple.

I assume your rafter tails are sound and you have wood blocking in good conditon between rafters to serve as a nailer for the fascia board.  I can't really see a side view of the top plate/rafter tail/brick face/fascia in your picture.  It would appear to be a hybrid that has a bit of eave overhang.  I like to NOT nail fascia to roof decking so that each can be changed independently.  I prefer having roof decking/sheathing to extend over the top of the fascia with drip edge covering the exposed edge.

Here are some roof edge profiles that are done well:

The second drawing titled clipped edge sounds the most like your application.

I don't know that I have solved your problem.
