Building Homes or Extensions - Side Entrance to Basement

Question
Hello,

I am in the midst of trying to hire a contractor to put a side entrance for direct access to the basement.  Can you give me some advice on what to look for, I understand drainage is important and I have a solution for the drainage to be tied into the laundry room which is beside the stairs rather then going into the weeping tile.  I would like to be informed prior to hiring a contractor so an advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank-you

Answer
Hi Melissa, a basement entrance will require retaining walls on each side of the entrance beginning at the basement wall and leading up to grade.  These retaining walls will need their own footing drains along with a drain near the entry door to disperse of any water that will try to accumulate in front of the basement wall.  The retaining walls will have to be built to withstand the pressure of the surrounding earth and their footings will have to be below the frost line.   I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
