Question
just removed a window encasement. want to fill hole with cinder block.want to know the correct way to keep the mortar joints even with existing ones. the new blocks just keep on pushing the mortar out

Answer
Hi franc, a little trick I have seen masons do, and I have done it myself, is to use chips of block or small wood shims to hold up the block until the mortar sets up.  You then pull the shim out and push some mortar into the void left by the shim or block chip.   Works every time..I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
