Building Homes or Extensions/siding

Question
I am reducing an 18 foot garage opening to 9 feet. It's the front of the house, and is actually the only part of the home that is visable from the street. The house is slump block with a few areas of what I will call pseudo grained wood paneling. I would like to use some other (more substantial looking) siding.  This is in the desert southwest and the wall is southern facing. Termites frequent the area, too!

Answer
Hi renee, if the existing wood siding, I am betting that it is plywood T-111, is in good termite free condition you can add a lap siding over the top of it.  I recommend Hardie siding.  It is made out of cement and is very durable.  Cover the old plywood with felt paper or house wrap paper, Tyvek or Typar and then put the Hardiboard over that.  Follow all Hardiboard installation instructions and you should be fine.  I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
