Building Homes or Extensions/2X8 FLOOR

Question
I HAVE A HOUSE THAT THE FLOOR FOR THE ATTIC WAS 2X8. WE WANT TO GO UP AND USE AS LIVING ARE, WE ARE ALSO GOING OUT ON THE SIDE AND CONTINING THE SAME FLOOR. WE PRETTY MUCH NEED TO STAY WITH 2X8'S. IS THIS OK TO SUPPORT A MASTER BED/BATH? THE SPANS WILL BE ALMOST 25' WITH THREE 2X8 LVLS GOING THE OPPOSITE WAY THROUGH THE CENTER, SO THE 2 SPANS WILL BE 11 1/2'.

Answer
Hi Anthony, 11'-6" is probably pushing the envelope for a 2x8 span but it should be okay..I recommend a row of bridging blocks (2x8) at mid span of each of the 11-6 spans and one row over the center of the LVL beam.  This will help keep the joists from being too bouncy.  If you are installing a bathtub I suggest keeping it along an outside wall if possible where the joists the strongest.  I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
