Building Homes or Extensions/Load Bearing supports

Question
I had my house built in 1995. It is a 2 story with a lower level walkout(basicall 3 floors). There is an 8'X8" support in the middle of the microlamb load bearing support. The problem is that it is in the middle of where a family room would be. What is the code with regards to the maximum distance from one supprot to another? I'm looking ot move it a foot one way or the other.

Answer
Wade,

The model building codes (IRC, for example) provide some span and member sizing guidelines for wood structures, but once you introduce engineered elements like trusses or microlams, the engineering supercedes code.  Which is to say, your beam and column were "custom" sized by the builder, designer or engineer for just your situation.  To relocate the column, you will need a professional to look at your home and design the appropriate solution.  If you have a builder in mind, start there; otherwise, I suggest you consult a structural engineer.  I hope this helps you get started.  Good luck, Ted.
