Building Homes or Extensions/flooring

Question
Second floor has two rooms, one finished. The unfinished room has 2"x8" floor
joists with 16' span. Can I run 2"x4" perpendicular with 5/8" OSB on top? Will
this be sufficient to support the load?

Answer
Hi Rich, I'm not sure what the 2x4's will accomplish short of adding more weight.  Sixteen feet is about twice as much span as a 2x8 floor joist is capable of.  A 2x8 will sag under it's own weight at 16'.  Maybe by adding several rows of bridging will help firm up the floor but it's still a little iffy.  But if your existing finished room has the same floor system and it seems to be working then what can I say?  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
