Building Homes or Extensions/interior soffits in new house

Question
I am designing a new house. The living room drops down 1'-6" from the dining room. Both are along the same plane at the front of the house, each unit is 16'-0"x16'-0". The LR opens to a covered deck on two sides, 12'-0" wide. The dining room is at 9'-6" height,so living room is at 11'-0". I do not know how to resolve this high ceiling in living room. Should I add soffits, or put two different roofs on each unit? If soffits, how high up the wall?

Answer
Dear Lee,

I would keep the varied ceiling heights. Stepping down into a living room and having the ceiling stay the same is a nice feature. A high ceiling will make the room feel larger.

If you do plan to do a drop ceiling, keep it at 8' so that standard sheetrock and finishing methods will apply.

Expertise

I can answer questions about designing and building homes and outbuildings, especially for colder climates. I am expert in timber framing, but of course I also know about other kinds of residential construction techniques and materials. Because of my emphasis on using local materials and organic alternatives, I know quite about about Green Building and am willing to do the research to find out more.

Experience

I've been a timber framer for 20 years, working as a general contractor who designs and builds custom timberframe homes, working as much as possible with local organic materials, from foundation to finish. I also have expertise in designing, building, and setting up pre-fab remote camp facilities on terra firma or temperate glaciers for research and expeditions, using helicopters for support.
