Building Homes or Extensions/Slab or Crawl Space

Question
I'm in process of building a new home in south Louisiana. My wife wants a raised floor plan since the house will be an Acadian Style home with wrap around porch.  We are trying to keep the budget below 225K.  Does a raised house plan cost more to build vs. a normal slab? Please also include some helpful tips I need to know in building a home.  Thank you very much.

Answer
Minh Le, that is a hard answer to give.  The crawl space or basement will cost a bit more.  The big deciding factor will be what builders in your area are accustomed to doing.  If you do decide on a crawl space make sure you give it a very adequate crawl, maneuvering in So many is really miserable.  Make sure you make some good provisions for termite and moisture issues.  I think of Louisiana as low lying land that would be prone to moisture issues which may not be fair.  Make sure there is good drainage away from the house and plan or discuss sump, vapor barrier.

Build as "green" as possible, energy and water won't get cheaper.  Look into geothermal HVAC, LED lighting, and demand only hot water.  Your wrap aroung porch helps shade the houise.  Hope all goes well.
