Building Homes or Extensions/loft in a porch

Question
Hi Bruce,
I would like to add a storage loft above my porch.  I have recently had our porch screened in with 2x4 construction on the front, and the front of the house is the back wall. I have no idea what is beneath the vinyl siding as the house(actually a cottage) was built in 1933 and is of lath and plaster on the inside.
The loft itself will be 8' X 8'. The framing will be 16" O.C. with a 1/2" OSB floor on it.
My 2 questions are what size framing to use, and whether to attach it to the house or use posts against the house.
Go easy on your answer, please. I am a moderately accomplished deck builder, but not much knowledge beyomd that.
Thank you,
Keith

Answer
Hi Keith, If you can build a deck you can build this project, it is similar.  You know how to frame a wall right? bottom plate, studs 16" apart, two top plates..chances are your house is framed the same way. A 2x8 will span 8 feet for a joist if needed, 2x6 rafters on a shed roof attached to a ledger board with simpson joist/rafter hangers.  Definately attach this project to the house.  Attach ledger boards with long enough lag bolts to penetrate the existing wall studs at least two inches. The best thing to do is draw up a plan, to scale, as to what you want to accomplish. When you have a good plan, with an elevation, showing the floor joists, the roof, the walls, foundation, etc. and a floor plan.  Then you can finalize your material list and begin construction or apply for a permit.I hope this information helps, feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
