Building Homes or Extensions/choosing new construction windows
Expert: Dave Johnson - 4/16/2009
QuestionI am preparing to start construction on a new, 3000sq ft home located in upper east Tennessee. I am currently shopping for windows. How do I choose? Brand? Energy Efficiency? How do I compare "apples to apples" since everyone I consult with declares theirs to be the BEST!!!!
AnswerHi Lisa,
Wow, this is almost like picking out wallpaper.
There are so many good ones to choose from.
You need to decide if you like wood or vinyl exposed on the interior.
Most now have a vinyl or aluminum finish outside.
Most definitely get a "low-E" window, this means it will have a low emmisivity thus allow less heat to escape.
The big box stores have an inexpensive brand of vinyl window... they have a "energy star" sticker on them but are just barely passing that requirement.
Stick with the more popular brands PELLA/ANDERSEN/MARVIN etc.
They may be only a bit better, but have a good warranty.
I personally use Andersen simply because that is what is sold where I buy all my materials.
Go to consumer reports.com and see if there is a recent comparison there.....
I feel as if I haven't been a lot of help, but best of luck with your project, and if you need more, mail me again.

Hi again Lisa,
I just checked with CR and the Andersen 200 series is a best buy and has a vinyl exterior.
The Pella "Impervia" has a fiberglass exterior and is also a best buy.
The Marvin Clad Ultimate is the highest rated and is middle of the road priced.
again, best of luck,
Dave
