Building Homes or Extensions/drainage

Question
When installing a French drain system, how far away from the house foundation do you begin the trench?  Would one foot be enough?  Thank you.  from Seattle, WA

Answer
Steve, the distance away is not as important as the proper depth.  The French drain should be lower than the floor it is protecting.  On normal new construction, the french drain is installed along the footing encased in gravel.  A normal distance would be about a foot.  The best systems also use a product similar to Enkadrain on the walls to allow any ground water to get down to the drain tiles quickly without jeopardizing the walls and their waterproofing/damp proofing.  The other standard problem has to do with how you get rid of the water.  If there is a way to direct the piping to daylight, it is certainly better than having to use a sump and pump.

Hope this anwered your question.
