Building Homes or Extensions/Drywall attachment to ceiling tile

Question
I am  remodeling a school restroom and the plans call out for 5/8" gyp board to overlay existing ceiling tile.  My question is how do I want to attach the gyp board to a 1'x 1' ceiling tile assembly, and is this structurally sound.

Answer
Seth, you would need to verify the existing framing.  Most 12 x 12 ceilings have wood furring attached to the ceiling joists.  There would be no problem attaching drywall to the furring strips.  I would use 1 5/8 drywall screws.  I would run the new drywall perpendicular to the furr strips.

I would think it would be better for everyone to remove the old tiles - messy but easy - and attach the drywall directly to the furr strips unless there are other reasons not to.  There may be loose insulation blown in on the tiles, but I doubt it.
