Question
I have just built a composite deck and now want to screen in the lower level (basement walkout).  We extended the deck above by 4 feet, so there are now columns in the inner part of what I want to screen.  We have decided to remove them and put in a steel beam.  i am having a problem figuring out what size I should get.  The deck in 14 x 18. The span I am trying to replace with a beam is 18'.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Anne, contact your local steel beam supplier and get an engineered response to this question.  I am not an engineer..at least a twelve inch deep beam at at least 20 lbs a foot..should work..but I suggest before removing any structural elements that you consult an engineer.  sincerely bruce e johnson
