Building Homes or Extensions/supporting headers

Question
Bruce,

I'm confident with most aspects of building a single story
but I'm not sure about the support needed for a 4"x6' header over a window.

Would I use 2 studs or 3 studs to support the header, also,
what would be the proper way to secure the header? Toe-nailed with 4 16d nails each side or ??

I really appreciate your input,

Dale

Answer

Typical opening framin
Hi Dale, for windows up to 4' wide generally a single cripple on each side will suffice.  4-8' wide openings take two cripples on each side.  Larger openings get triple cripples.  I like to face nail into the main stud on each side, face nail each cripple into the main stud and then toe nail the outer cripple up into the bottom of the header. I have attached a simple detail. I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
