Building Homes or Extensions/Adding 3rd storey of timber to brick below

Question
I would like to add a 3rd storey to an existing double wythe brick construction home which is approx. 65' x 23'. There are no bearing walls within the structure, just the exterior walls. Are there ANY guidelines you can offer? I would like to use my roof as a light garden as well, so I wanted to triple the posts and joists every 8' perhaps ...
any ideas? What is the best way to aproach building on top of brick at that height? [approx. 24' high]

Thanks you so much for your service!

Charles

Answer
HI Charles,
First, try and see if the wythes are connected to each other (you should be able to see an occasional cross-brick or other tie)
A top plate could be attached to the brick wall with masonry anchors, and depending on the climate you may want to add a sealer onder the plate.

After that, the framing/building will be just as ant other.
You mentioned using extra posts, just remember that the posts, in order to be structural, will need support below them.....

If you need anything more, please mail me again,
Best of luck,

Dave
