Building Homes or Extensions/Bracing under floor joist

Question
Hi Bruce, Thank you for all the resourceful information that you provide.  I have a question about bracing under floor joist; I live in a split level ranch home, I am currently remodeling my lower level bathroom, a stand-up shower once stood where I am planning to install a full bathtub in place of the stand up shower, the question is; should I reinforce the area directly underneath the joist with metal or wood to prevent any sagging or bowing?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Vince, I don't know how your floor system is built but most conventional floor systems can support a bathtub provided the material is in good condition. Bathtubs are usually close to outside walls and the closer you get to a bearing point the stronger the joist is. So I don't see any reason from the information provided to say any different.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely, bruce e johnson
