Question
I live in the wonderful state of Florida and I was wondering how much trouble would I need to go through to build a cob house down here... Like - Where could I get the material, what permits, codes other papers ect. I would need and if it would last down here in our weather and climate.

Answer
Hi Tim, I have never built a Cob Structure however according to the proponents of this building technique it can be used in all sorts of climates including rainy ones.  Whether or not it can withstand a hurricane or tropical storm winds, I personally can't say.  Just like any building in Florida you will need building plans signed and sealed by an architect and structural plans signed and sealed by an engineer.  If you can get an engineer and an architect to sign off on this type of structure then you can probably get a building permit. As far as materials go, we have sand and mud in Florida just like anywhere else.  I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
