Building Homes or Extensions/Garden pergola

Question
Dan,
I am building a garden pergola.  The cross pieces will span 14 feet between
end beams (I'm trying to avoid having to put another beam in the center of
that span.  I am looking at 14 foot redwood 2x6s or 2x8s to span that 14 feet
.  There will be no other lattice work on top of that,  Just the 2x6s or 2x8s
about 12" apart.  i live in Colorado, but snow loads sholdn't be a factor since
each beam is only supporting its own weight.
WIll 2x6s bear that span, or maybe 2x8s?  Or what would you suggest?
WHere can I look that information up?
Thanks,
   Paul

Answer
Paul, it sounds like you are just setting up joists with no decking.  My dad did a similar thing in Boulder when I was a kid.  YOu are looking for material to span the distance without sagging from its own weight.

I like this span table as it gives you many choices:
http://www.awc.org/calculators/span/reversecalc/reversecalc.asp

I plugged in 14'/Redwood/Ceiling Joist/10# live/ 10# dead/Exterior/ and I increased the stiffness to L/480.  It returned 2x8.  You might play around with species and a few other variables.

Hope this gives you what you want.
