Building Homes or Extensions/Replacing a beam

Question
We had removed a load bearing wall years ago and replaced it with a beam. We want to replace that same beam to a much longer one to open up the room to the adjoining room, and recess it as much possible. What measurements do I need to determine the size of beam I will need to buy? I was told it I give the measurements at a lumber, they tell me the size.

Answer
Hi Catalina, measure the total width of the opening that you want that is your "span".  Then measure from the floor up to the ceiling or bearing height of the existing structure.  Now you need to determine what kind of opening height you want.  The difference between the desired opening height and the ceiling height will determine the desired thickness of the beam. I hope this information helps, feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
