Question
Hi the room I plan on is about 8x11 feet. It will be attached to my kitchen wall. What can I do to keep it being protected from shifting and heaving? I live in Maine and it gets very cold here. Some one mentioned a frost wall but can't find anything to that effect info. My deck steps have heaved and can't allow that to happen for the new addition. Please advise me on how to build the foundation right beneath it. Thanks. Barbara

Answer
Hi Barbara, generally speaking you have to build your foundation footings below the local frost line.  In Maine this can be over four feet deep.  Once the concrete footing is dug and poured you build your foundation wall up from that to the floor level you desire.  Backfill the area , compact it and then cap with your slab...I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
