Building Homes or Extensions/Load Bearing cinder block wall removal

Question
Hello Dave,
I am the proud owner of a older (35 years old)2 story home that has been renovated several times by previous owners. The kitchen used to look outside apparently. It had 2 storm aluminum windows with screens when we moved in, which I removed and made a shadow box to fit in the space. The windows used to look at our washer and dryer as you stand at the sink so it is also a plumbing wall. There is a steel band that surrounded the windows. Soon after I removed them the vermiculite began falling and I placed duct tape over it. Now we want to expand our kitchen toward the washer and dryer area to open upp the kitchen. The problem is it is a cinderblock support wall and it is a two story structure. How do I remove the wall without making this my house a one story structure? :-)
AnswerHi Chuck,
You will need to use a steel "h" beam for a header to support the upper level. This can be supported by either cinder blocks or wood frame. You'll need to use a temporary support under the upper joists while the work is done. The size of the header depends on the width of your opening.
I hope this is clear... if not, please mail me again with as much detail as you like...
