Building Homes or Extensions/ceiling joists

Question
I want to raise the ceiling level in a one story ranch house by exposing the beams in the ceiling and cover the top of the beams with tongue and grooved wood. the longest span is 27 1/2 feet.  Current ceiling joists are 2x8 on 16 inch centers and the rafter are on 24 inch centers - not trussed. Is it possible to place larger beams on 3 or 4 ft centers to span this distance?  The house is on Cape Cod in Mass.  Thanks, Mike Miller

Answer
Hi Michael you can go 48" spacing if you use 2x4 or 2x6 tongue and groove.  1x4 tongue and groove?  You might be able to go up to 32" spacing.  I hope this information helps, feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
