Building Homes or Extensions/garage door headers

Question
Hi, I am doing some home renos and i would like to replace my existing 9'x7' garage door with a 12'x7' door. I guess my question is how would i go about changing the header, if this is even possible, and what kind of bracing would I have to do while I'm switching headers? Thanks

Answer
Hi Jasen, if the wall is supporting a hip roof then you basically build a simple wall inside the supporting wall to hold up the roof structure while you remove and replace the header.  Have all your wood and materials ready to go before starting the project.  Once your temporary shoring is in place then, using a sawzall you cut all the nails holding the header and its studs in place and remove them.  then install the new header with studs and cripples.  The new header will have to be toenailed up into the existing top plate of the header wall.  Do the toe nailing from both sides of the wall if possible.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
