Building Homes or Extensions/header size

Question
I need to know what size header to use for a 22' openning, 24' in length supporting a hip roof(22' deep x 24' wide garage) and an extention 11' deep x 24' wide in WI. I am taking out the back wall and adding 11' in depth.
Thanks, Dennis

Answer
Hi dennis, I wouldn't go any smaller than either a 6x16 wood beam or a double 16" LVL (laminated) beam.  I imagine you will need to have an engineer sign off on your structural design prior to getting a building permit. He may have other alternatives or require a larger beam more suited to your locale and snow loads.  A local truss manufacturing plant can also help you with your roof design including the LVL beams.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
