Building Homes or Extensions/making covered deck into sunroom

Question
Hi, we just bought a house that has across the full back length of the house a covered patio. The dimensions are 10' wide by 22 feet long.  It is covered with a cathedral ceiling that is supported by 4 x 4 posts (in cement footings)every 6 feet.  The issue is the floor.  The first 6 feet is wood decking that is raised about 12 inches above the rest of the patio that has a concrete floor.  We want to add on to the wood decking by using floor joists.  My question is: If using 2 x 8's across the 10' span do we need additional support in the middle of the span? It will be anchored to the house as well as to the 4 x 4 posts.  Thanks for any help that you can give.

Answer
Hi Pamela, a 2x8 joist with a 10 foot span will be a little springy.  I would support it at mid span.  Depending on how high up the joists are from the slab, it might just be a simple case of using a 2x4 pt continuous support.  If you don't mind the bounce, 2x8's will be okay.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
