Building Homes or Extensions/new contruction concrete slab foundation

Question
My question concerns new construction concrete slab foundation to be poured on south Texas clay soil.  It is often very dry here and I am sometimes afraid I'll loose my dogs in the cracks that form where I don't water!! I am hesitant to have a pier and beam construction because mice, scorpions, and snakes tend to reside under any shady shelter.  Are there any special precautions I can take or certain specifications that I need to insist upon?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Anita, making sure the ground is compacted well prior the concrete being poured is a necessity.  You should have the slab poured when the soil is not saturated with rain or stone dry.  A swollen clay soil will contract when it dries and adversely a bone dry clay soil will expand when it gets wet. So getting the slab poured during a moderate season will be best.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
