Question
Bruce, I have started a pergola over an existing deck it will be in two section on
higher the the other so one section (lower) is 14x16 I have used the following
materials 6x6 post 2x12x16 for the main supports now heres the question for
the 16 span I will need to buy 2x8x18s so I can have an overhang, will the 2x8s
be okay if I put 2x4s on top of the 2x8 ?

Answer
Hi Jeff, 2x8 for a 16 foot span is kind of puny. But if it is just for a pergola and you put the crown of the joist up you should be okay.  I have a feeling that over time the 2x8 may want to sag a bit. I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
