Building Homes or Extensions/rust on I beams

Question
We have a parking deck that is only 6 years old.  The new
I-beams we put in are already rusting.     We are working on the remaining deck now and want to avoid the problem.  How can we coat the I-beam to prevent this?   We live in a climate that gets lots of snow and where a lot of salt is used.            Thanks.

Answer
Hi Julie, I don't have a lot of information on how this parking deck is constructed or actually what a parking deck is for that matter.  However, the best way to ward off rust when using steel beams is to have them hot dipped galvanized prior to installation.  Existing beams can be coated with a zinc galvanizing paint once the rust is cleaned.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
