Question
QUESTION: I am adding on to my garage. I have installed 3- 4 x 6 posts to carry the rafters. Do I need to put the header into the wall? Or can I attach it with some kind of hanger method.

ANSWER: Hi Randy,
Just so I don't assume, are you adding onto the gable end or a side?
How wide is the garage?
How much are you adding on?How far apart are the posts?

QUESTION: Yes I am adding to the gable side. I also will be following the same roof line as the garage. 2x6 rafters.  the hole are to code at 42 " deep but that seems to be way to much. It not like I am in Minnisota or somewhere very cold for a very long period of time but did what code said. The garage will be 16' wide by 26 deep. the post are approx.12 feet apart. I know this is a little short of the 26' but the overhang will be added on. I do have other hole dug for the overhang post.  Do I need to open the exiting wall so that it will set on the top plate?

Answer
Okay, The posts don't have to be into the existing wall, but it would be better. If you attach them with an 6"x6"steel angle under and a plate (gusset) on both sides it will be o.k.
If you attach by opening the wall, cut into the wall so that the top plate is the same height as the existing one.
I hope this is clear, if not, mail me again...
