Building Homes or Extensions/Exterior paint

Question
Hey, Bruce!!
Don't know if this is within your area of expertise or not, but here goes: Do I need two coats of primer on a bare (T1-11) totally exposed, south-facing wall, or will one coat do? I live in East Texas.

Answer
Hi Peggie, when it comes to paint I like to follow the manufacturers recommendations because not all paints are created equal.  Generally speaking the primer is used to help the paint adhere to a surface so in most cases one coat of primer will suffice but then at least two coats of paint should follow.  If the primer states that when priming "bare wood" that two coats may be necessary then by all means put on two coats but still follow up with two coats of paint. T-111 is a very good surface to paint.  It absorbs coatings well and holds up over time if painted properly. After priming, be sure to do your caulking prior to final paint and be sure to use galvanized or stainless steel fasteners on the plywood. I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
