Question
i am connecting a patio cover to excisting roof. i have 2 6x6 post 16' from house that are 12' apart would a 4x6 wood bm be enough to support 16'4x4s at 24" from house to beam?

Answer
Hi mark, 4x6 is kind of puny for a 12' span.  I would go at least 4x10 on your beam.  The 4x4's you have spanning 16' will sag over time if not immediately.  I recommend 2x8 joists at 24" centers minimum..I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
