Building Homes or Extensions/Installing hinges on door jamb extenions

Question
Hi Bruce, I hope this doesn't sound too basically uninformed, but if I install jamb extensions on an exterior and interior door to compensate for new bead board and 11/16 thick trim applied over drywall, do I move and re-install the door hinges into the jamb extensions so they protrude past the door trim as before?  Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Answer
Hi John, the only time it would be necessary to move the hinges is if the jamb extensions interfere with full swing of the door.  Most doors only need to open 110- 120 degrees to be fully functional.  Unless your jamb extension is real thick and you can't open the door to your satisfaction then you may want to consider moving the hinges.  But remember, if you move the hinges you will then need to move the strikes etc.  So install your jamb extensions and check your swing arc before moving any other hardware.  I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
