Hi there, I am just buying a period property and am a bit concerned about a metal cross support (looks like a narrow metal X) that seems to be supporting the roof in some way?  The roof is slate and the X stretches from ceiling to floor.  Does this mean that there has been a problem with the roof and is it likely to be expensive to repair in a more modern way?  Also I am proposing to put a room in the roof so would that interfere please?   The property is Victorian.  I cannot find anything on the net to help so am hoping you have the time to reply.  Thanking you in anticipation.

Can you e-mail some detailed photos to me as its difficult anylysing situations from word.

There can be two factors, one is that this was initially constructed in this fashion and remained in-situ during previous alterations or it was installed to brace the roof structure acting like a wind post.
This was carried out in some earlier properties.
I assume you havent seen title deeds showing previous alterations.
I would look closely at the surveyors report if you had one carried out but honestly i would request a structural engineers report as they tend to be more openly honest and would estimate any remedial repairs needing done and inform you of any qualifications required to carry out alterations you may intend having done.
Older buildings which camoflage faults are seldom difficult to see to the novice and until an open survey is carried out is when you find the unexpected.
