Building Homes or Extensions/making open bar area in load bearing wal

Question

I am making a open area 8'x4' in an existing load bearing wall. Can I use aluminum beams to add support for my framing of this open area. The beams are currently wood. There will be a end post at both ends but I need to build the frame out of existing beams to carry the weight of this wall so my drywall and frame of house does not sag. I did not know if aluminum could be used in load bearing walls and added to wood beams for support.

Answer
Amy,

The wall shown in your picture doesn't appear to be a load-bearing wall.  It seems to have a single top plate, and the exiting opening has no header.  Of course, if an expert has informed you that it SHOULD be a loadbearing wall, by all means rebuild it properly.  If you do so, the typical materials to use for headers (the term for a beam over a window or door opening) are wood or, in some cases, steel.  Aluminum is generally more expensive, but if for some reason you have structural aluminum laying around, it could be used, but only if you are able to find or calculate its bearing capacity.  For a 4' or 8' span, it will be easier to use dimensional lumber or LVLs.  I hope this helps.
