Building Homes or Extensions/beam installation

Question
QUESTION: Hi
We are proposing to knock down an internal brick supporting wall and replace with a beam, the span is 4m the new beam would support the existing floor joists above which is composed of joists which are 225 x 50 at 400m centres, would you think we would be ok with a pair of beams sized at 250 x 50 each

ANSWER: Hi,

Undertaking work of this nature should always be certified by a structural engineer.
In short my answer is no.
Is this a  2 storey ? The joist dimensions and centres indicate integrity for  greater load supporting.
The beam dimensions in height could be adequate but on girth are to narrow and using seperate beams could create movement and be difficult to pin when inserting.
If you wish to add more info please contact me wher I can determine what is above the joist.

regards
Bill

QUESTION: Hi Bill

The only reason we suggested using 2 beams was for the ease of installation, once they are in position we would bolt them together, yes it is a two story house with no supporting wall above, might it be better using 2 beams at 250mm x 75mm

Answer

Please supply more detail and information to allow a more accurate answer, i presume the joist are ceiling joist and supporting roof truss?

1  Thickness of wall to be removed
2  direction of joist in relation to wall
3  method of carrying out the works

Bill
