Building Homes or Extensions/Concrete Block

Question
I don't want to get ripped off and am getting estimates. How much should it cost to block in an old basement window with cement block?

Answer
Hi Jessica, Gosh that is a tough one.  It is only going to take a couple of hours at the most to do this project.  But the contractor or handyman will want to make it worth his while or you will not get the work done properly, or not get the work done at all.  The work itself should take no more than 3 hours, probably 2 if he is organized. But there are some other factors you should take into consideration: the person will have to come out to look at the job and give you an estimate.  Depending on where you live, this act alone may take up to two hours of time.  Then they have to go to the store and get the materials, another hour or two.  Then they have to remove the window, another hour.  Then they have to mix the cement, cut the block to fit and install it to your satisfaction, another two hours minimum. He will have 6 hours invested in your project.  How much is qualified labor worth in your area?  I would say at least 25 dollars an hour for a handyman who works alone.  50 dollars an hour for a small company with one-three employees.  So anywhere from $150 to over $300 would be my guess for a small to medium sized window with concrete block given a rubbed finish (no struck mortar joints).  If you add a stucco finish or other criteria it will add to your cost.
Of course this estimate is based on generic conditions in rural or suburban areas..prices will vary according to your particular demographic area.

I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson
