Building Homes or Extensions/Roof
Expert: Bruce E. Johnson - 11/13/2010
QuestionI have an existing roof that is 50' long and 24' deep. Runs west to east with a 6/12 pitch. I am going to add an addition on each end the will extend 16' north to south. The roof lines will both be the 6/12 pitch and meet at the peek. Can you send me instructions on how to do this or maybe an overhead picture?
Thanks,
Pamela Dickey

Hi Pamela, First of all for the peaks to match the additions will also have to be 24' wide or the same width as the existing roof. You can however have the truss manufacturer "match peaks" or "ridge lines" on the new additions if having the roofs all meet at the ridge is important to you. This will give your additions a steeper roof pitch if they are narrower than 24' or a shallower pitch if they are wider than 24'.
As far as how you build the roofs in question? I don't quite get your desired design criteria. Will the new additions be centered on the existing house like this? I---I, or like this? I___I..? and when you say "extend 16' north and south" does that mean the addition will only be 16' long total? or is it going to be 16' north? and 16' south? for a total of 32'?
The easiest way to tie the roofs together on your project would be to make the additions the same length as the house is wide 24'. This way you can simply "T" the roof line and the ridges will match at the peak. Drawing A of my attached sketch.
If the Addition is only going to be 16' wide and centered on the existing house's 24' width. Then your new ridge line would be better off being lower and the new addition roof would fall under the existing gable end. Drawing B
