Answer
Mary-Jo,

You are probably referring to SIP, which stands for structural insulated panel.  Also called sandwich panels by some, they consist of two faces (usually OSB or plywood) filled with foam insulation.  The insulation can be glued on or foamed in place, and varies in thickness.  In a properly designed structure, these panels screw to each other with no additional framing, and serve as structure and insulation for walls, floors, and roof/ceiling.  They can even come with gypsum board finishes preattached.

Best of luck to your son with his apprenticeship.
