Building Homes or Extensions/Recessed Lighting Clearance

Question
Hi Dan,

Do you know if there are any clearance requirements for recessed lighting cans?  We're rehabbing an old home that has floor joists that are 7.5 inches deep (top to bottom).  We want to install recessed lighting and measured the 6" cans are 7" deep with a half inch protruding beyond the drywall, which would give us 1/2" of clearance between the top of the can and the subfloor above.  We plan to use insulation contact cans, but I can't seem to find any information regarding safe installation with respect to flooring above a recessed light.  Basically, I don't want to install lights that will heat the floor above or worse, cause a fire.  Can you point me in the right direction?

Answer
Amy, sorry to take so long but I have been totally immersed in Singing Valentines - my favorite event of the year, lots of fun.  I do not have the best answer for your question.  I think that IC recessed lights (rated for direct contact with insulation) will work for you.  These usually have a thermal breaker that turns off the light if it overheats.  There are LED bulbs to use in these fixtures that are very cool.  Pick out an IC fixture that you like, and check with the manufacturer for installation requirements.
