Building Homes or Extensions/Sealing concrete or mortar

Question
I am told that by adding salt to your mortar mix you can make it waterproof. Is this true, and if so what is the mix?
If not do you have any other suggestions?

Answer
Howard, I would be very worried to advise doing anything like that.  I have had masons add dishwashing soap in the high heat of summer to slow down the setting.. I've never seen salt added, though I have had some old timers (wait a minute, now I AM one) suggest clacium chloride (a salt) to allow them to work in light freezing conditons.  Both pracdtices would not meet architectural or engineering approval.

Sealing masonry and mortar is done after the fact.  There are several brands, but the material is always a liquid version of silane or siloxane.  This is assuming you want to keep the original color of the brick and mortar work.  If you are talking about waterproofing and covering the masonry work, ask me again.
