im building a 20x60 pergola, how far apart should i set the 6x6 post

Shawn, too many variables.  The horizontal beam on top of the posts will determine the spacing of the posts.  Are you planning a dimension lumber type header or a cedar or other beam?  Is there going to be a roof, or just open joists?  Are you planning to clear span the 20'?  These questions and their answers are what keeps structural engineers in business.  A good REAL lumber yard can help you size lumber and spans.  There are so many ways to do the job, there is no such thing as a simple answer.
