Building Homes or Extensions/header replacement / temp support

Question
Hi Bruce,

I want to replace two side by side windows having individual headers with a single window and a single header.  This is a single story ranch home with 2x4 construction.  The current headers are 2x10s with a 1/2" plywood center and are 44" long.  The windows are separated with two trimmers and one king stud, the headers are butted against the top plate.  Each header also has a  2x4 laying flat underneath the header and resting on trimmer studs.  The ceiling joists run perpendicular.  The plan is to replace with a single header of same construction, but 94" long, then add trimmer studs to create a RO width of 78".
1) Will the replacement header support a span of 78"?
2) What temporary support is required?  Work will be done immediately within hours.
3) How do I, (or can I), protect my  porcelain tile floor, (13" tiles on 1/4" backer board), and 1/2" sheetrock ceiling from the load on the temporary support.
4) Do I need to carry temporary support through the basement to the slab?
Thanks for the help.

Bob

Answer
Hi Bob, yes a double 2x10 header should span the new opening no problem with a double trimmer or cripple stud supporting each end.  If you build a temporary wall to support the three middle trusses over the opening with a stud under each truss this should suffice.  If your exterior truss tail is exposed you can support from the outside.  Even if you have to pull out a few ventilated soffit panels outside you would be better off supporting everything from the outside so you can do the inside work. If you have a solid 2x? fascia attached to the trusses you may even be able to support the trusses from the fascia.   I hope this information helps, feel free to write again regarding this or other matter, sincerely bruce e johnson.
