Building Homes or Extensions/cottage foundation

Question
Hi Ted
We have a 1950's cottage in Ontario that is on piers. We are adding an addition with a poured foundation. We want this for storage, future possibility of duct work and to avoid mice. I am worried about the other part. Have you seen this work or should we be considering lifting the old part and having poured foundation throughout?

Thanks Kate

Answer
Kate,

If your existing pier footings are below the frost line, you should have no problems with your proposed addition.  It is not uncommon in cold climates to use a mix of wall and pier foundations.  If in doubt as to the depth of your footings, it would be well worth your while to locate them before proceeding.  Best of luck.
