Building Homes or Extensions/Flooring for Pier & Beam
Expert: Bruce E. Johnson - 7/22/2010
QuestionQUESTION: We have a house that is on a pier & beam foundation, in a sandy area of Texas (close to San Antonio). We have ripped out the carpet, but are not sure what to put down. I would really like to have laminate flooring, but just not sure if this would work. Of course, expense is a major issue and we will be doing it ourselves. What is your recommendation?
Thanks in advance for your help.
ANSWER: Hi Trea, I see no reason why laminate flooring wouldn't work if installed and cared for accoring to manufacturer's recommendations. If you are worried about the gritty sand being tracked in and scratching the floor I don't think that is a big issue. If you're worried about moisture, most laminates require a vapor barrier be installed underneath first. Another option is tile, there are several nice big tiles available at Home Depot for less than 1.50 a sq foot, that's pretty cheap if you install it yourself. QUESTION: My main concern with the laminate is the shifting of the house, being that it is on sand. If the laminate is "floating", will it adjust to movement without buckling? I am concerned about tile, because of the weight.
AnswerHi again Trea, I can't imagine your house is shifting that much to affect either flooring choice. Yes the laminate floats and when given the required clearance around the edges will expand and contract without buckling. The weight of tile is negligible and if installed with thin set as opposed to a mud base you shouldn't need to worry about the weight any more than you should need to worry about standing in one place for too long and falling through the floor. I would recommend a thin underlayment sheet be installed prior to tiling. I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson
