Building Homes or Extensions/sister beams

Question
i want to make a room in the basement, the beans have been sistered. the old beams are deeper than the new ones.I was wondering if i could cut them back to make a higher ceiling.

Answer
HI caroline, I don't really have enough information.  When you say "sistered" I assume you mean that for some reason the old beam needed added support so addditional beams were attached to them?  By beams are you talking about floor joists?  How long is the span and what size are the beams/joists?  If you care to write back I may be better able to answer your question. sincerely bruce e johnson
