Building Homes or Extensions/Modifying a Truss Roof System

Question
We have a small (5'X6') interior bathroom with no outside light.  I would like to raise the ceiling and a skylight  in order to add volume and light to the room, however we have a truss roof system, and there are three beams that would need to be modified in order to raise the ceiling.  What steps do I need to take to make this work without compromising the roof stability.  Also, any idea what this kind of work would cost?

Answer
Hi Elaine, If you know where the trusses were purchased locally, the easiest way to get them modified would be to have the truss manufacturing plant redesign them and actually come out and do the work. Another option would be to have a structural engineer come up with a fix.  It would be hard to put a cost on the project but it will be several thousand dollars I'm sure.  Another option would be installing skylights or light tubes to bring in natural light.  These generally require little structural modification to the trusses.  I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
