Building Homes or Extensions/limestone steps

Question
Hi Dan,

I have limestone steps in front of my home.  One step is badly cracked due to using an ice pick to remove ice.  The steps that I have are gray in color.  I contracted a mason to buy a new step and install it.  He arrived with a limestone step that is chalk white.  I did not have him install it as the color is way off.  He told me that it would turn gray over time.  Will a chalk white limestone step turn gray or did he perhaps order the wrong color step?

Answer
I don't have much experience with color change in limestone.  It is normally purchased at the same time, so is usually consistent.  As to replacement, I suspect it would come from the same quarry if it is local stone, but even colors change as they move through a quarry.

I wish I could give you better advice, but I would contact a local stone company for more accurate information.
