Question
My two story house has a steel beam installed accross the middle of the ceiling in the basement.  Apparently, the original supporting columns were replaced. The house appears to be "settling" in the center over the steel beam which appears to have bowed.  Could you give me info on how to replace/repair and who I might contact that is experienced in doing this type of job - I need an experienced contractor and a supplier. -- I live in the Northeast. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Erik, your best bet would be to find a structural engineer in your area and have him assess the situation.  Once the problem is assessed the engineer can develop a fix for it.  As far as contractors go, foundation and structural contractors or contractors specializing in structural repairs would be your best source.  House moving companies are also qualified to do this kind of work and have the hydraulic jacks and equipment that will be needed to support the house while the beam is being replaced. Check your local yellow pages and make some phone calls.  Let the I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.comm come out and look, it won't cost you anything for an estimate.
